The map
Ubajara Map Poster & Print
Ubajara lies on the Serra da Ibiapaba, the long plateau that runs along the western edge of Ceará near the border with Piauí. The town occupies high, relatively cool ground, and just beyond it the escarpment falls steeply toward the dry sertão. On a map the streets form a compact grid, with roads running along the plateau to neighbouring towns in the range.
The town is best known for Ubajara National Park, one of Brazil's smallest national parks, created to protect the forested slopes of the escarpment and the limestone Ubajara Cave. A cable car has long carried visitors down the cliffs to the cave entrance. Coffee and other crops grow on the plateau, helped by its milder, wetter climate.
An Ubajara map poster shows a town defined by its position on the edge. The orderly street grid, the roads running along the ridge and the sudden emptiness where the land drops away give the composition real depth, even in flat black and white. It suits anyone who has stood at the lookouts and watched the backlands stretch toward the horizon.

Escarpment edge
Close to town the plateau ends in steep, forested slopes. On the map the street network stops abruptly here, leaving a strong, clean boundary.
Ridge roads
Roads follow the length of the plateau toward other towns of the Ibiapaba range, forming long lines that hint at the scale of the highland.
