Terraced streets
The town climbs the valley sides in narrow, curving streets that follow the contours. They produce a dense, layered pattern that looks almost like a relief drawing.

The map
Ubrique Map Poster & Print
Ubrique lies in the north of Cádiz Province, in the Sierra de Grazalema, one of the rainiest and most rugged mountain areas of southern Spain. The town fills a narrow valley and climbs up its sides. On a map the streets run in tight, curving tiers along the slopes, and limestone peaks close in around the built-up area.
Ubrique is one of the white towns of Andalusia, and it is especially known for leather craftsmanship. Its workshops have a long tradition of making bags, wallets and small leather goods, much of it for well-known fashion houses. The remains of the Roman town of Ocuri, on a hill nearby, point to a much older history of settlement in the valley.
A Ubrique map poster captures a town shaped entirely by its terrain. There is no room for a regular grid, so the streets pack together, twist and step up the hillside, while the mountain slopes leave large empty areas around them. The composition is dense at the centre and wild at the edges.

Mountain frame
The limestone ridges of the Sierra de Grazalema surround Ubrique closely. On the map they leave broad open areas and confine the town to the valley.
Valley corridor
The town stretches along the valley floor and lower slopes, which gives it an elongated shape oriented by the mountains and not by any planned layout.
