The map
Valday Map Poster & Print
Valday stands on the western shore of Lake Valdai in Novgorod Oblast, in the hill country known as the Valdai Hills. The town's streets follow the curve of the lake, with a waterfront edge on one side and a regular pattern of blocks behind it. On a map, the long, irregular outline of the lake dominates, and the town reads as a band of streets wrapped around its bay.
Across the water, on an island in the lake, stands the Iversky Monastery, founded in the seventeenth century and one of the region's best-known landmarks. The wider area forms part of Valdai National Park, a landscape of lakes and forest. Valday was also long known for its bells, especially the small harness bells once made here and associated with Russian troikas.
