The map
Valenciennes Map Poster & Print
Valenciennes lies in northern France near the Belgian border, where the Scheldt, known in French as the Escaut, runs north towards Flanders. From above you can still see the city's historic shape: a dense, roughly oval centre inside a ring of boulevards that replaced its old fortifications. Canalised stretches of the river curve along the western side.
The city belonged to the County of Hainaut before it became French in the seventeenth century. It was long known for its lace and later for coal and steel. It is also the birthplace of the painter Antoine Watteau. Since the decline of heavy industry it has turned to car manufacturing, a university and a modern tram line through the centre.
A Valenciennes map poster frames the tight medieval core inside its boulevards, with the river and the wider industrial basin around it. The contrast between the fine old streets, the broad ring roads and the larger blocks of the outer districts produces a strong, balanced composition. It works especially well in the Classic and Blueprint styles.

The Escaut
The Scheldt and its canalised channels run along the western edge of the city. They add long water lines that lead north towards Belgium.
Dense old centre
Inside the ring, narrow streets gather around the main square and churches. This fine-grained core is the visual heart of the map.

Why Valenciennes
A map that means something
Valenciennes means something to students of its university, to families with roots in the mining basin and to anyone who has walked its squares. A map poster holds the city's layout in one calm image, from the ring to the river.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with a date, a name or the city's old Hainaut connection. There are five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Printed posters on matte paper, with a wooden frame if you like, ship from partners in 30+ countries.
