Volokolamsk lies in the far west of Moscow Oblast and counts among the oldest towns in the region, with written records going back to the twelfth century. Its name refers to a portage on the Lama river, where boats were once dragged overland between waterways. That trade route is the reason the town was founded.
At the heart of the map is the kremlin, a raised site with a cathedral and earthen ramparts.
