The river curves along the southern side, the old town centre sits on the slope above it, and main roads radiate outward like the spokes of a wheel. The cathedral, whose spire is the tallest in Yorkshire, marks the centre of the street plan. Down by the river, the medieval Chantry Chapel stands on Wakefield Bridge.
