The airstrip
The runway runs straight through the town, a long, bold line on the map that reflects Wamena's dependence on air transport for goods and travel.

The map
Wamena Map Poster & Print
Wamena lies in the Baliem Valley in the central highlands of Papua, more than 1,500 metres above sea level. It is the capital of Jayawijaya Regency and, since 2022, of the province of Highland Papua. There are no road links to the coast, so almost everything arrives by air, and the airstrip is one of the most prominent features on the map of the town.
The Baliem River flows across the broad, flat valley floor, and steep mountain ridges enclose it on all sides. The valley is the homeland of the Dani and neighbouring peoples, whose cultivation of sweet potato in drained fields shaped the landscape long before the town was established in the mid-twentieth century.
A Wamena map poster frames the straight line of the runway against the town's streets and the curves of the river. Beyond the built area, the map opens into valley floor and mountain slopes, giving the composition a strong sense of setting. It is an unusual image: a town defined by an airport and ringed by highlands.

Baliem River
The river winds across the flat valley floor near the town, its meandering course contrasting with the straight runway and the regular streets.
Valley and ridges
Beyond the town, the valley opens into farmland before rising into steep mountain ridges, framing Wamena within a broad, enclosed highland basin.
