Weil der Stadt is at the edge of the Black Forest foothills, about twenty-five kilometres west of Stuttgart, in the valley of the small Würm river. For centuries it was a free imperial city, and its compact medieval core still reads clearly on a map. The town is best known as the birthplace of the astronomer Johannes Kepler, born here in 1571. His statue stands on the market square, and a museum occupies the house connected with his family.
