The old canal
The original canal channel runs through the centre of the city like a long straight line. Today it is a calm waterway lined with paths and parks.

The map
Welland Map Poster & Print
Welland sits in the middle of the Niagara Peninsula. On the map it is defined by water. The old channel of the Welland Canal runs straight through downtown, and a wide bypass channel, opened in the early 1970s, carries ships around the city to the east. The Welland River crosses under the old canal and meanders across the plain.
The canal made Welland an industrial city. Once the ships moved to the bypass, the old channel through downtown became a quiet recreational waterway, now used for rowing, paddling and flatwater sport. Welland is also known as the Rose City, after its gardens and parks.
A Welland map poster is a study in straight and curved water: the two parallel canal lines, the looping river, and the street grid between them. Few cities of this size have such a strong structure, and it reads clearly in every style.

The bypass channel
East of the city, the wider shipping channel draws a second, parallel line. It carries lake freighters between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.
The Welland River
The river winds across the flat land and intersects with the canal. It adds soft, irregular curves to the geometric composition.
