Castle ridge
The castle stretches along the top of the hill, reached by a road that zigzags up the slope, a distinctive line that stands out above the town.

The map
Xàtiva Map Poster & Print
Xàtiva lies in the Costera district of Valencia, where a long rocky ridge rises above the plain. The castle runs along its crest, and the historic town spills down the slope beneath it. On a map, the old quarter's narrow, bending streets sit tight against the hill, while newer districts spread out in straighter blocks toward the valley floor.
The town has an outsized place in European history. It was an early centre of paper-making in Europe during the Islamic period, and it was the home of the Borja family, which gave the Church two popes, Callixtus III and Alexander VI. In 1707, during the War of the Spanish Succession, the town was burned on the orders of Philip V.
A Xàtiva map poster shows these layers at once: the ridge and its winding castle approach, the dense historic core, the tree-lined alameda through the lower town and the rail line and roads leading across the plain. It is a map with a clear sense of up and down, even in flat black and white.

Historic quarter
Beneath the ridge, the old town's narrow streets and small squares form a tight, irregular pattern shaped by centuries of building on a slope.
Lower town and plain
Broader streets and a central promenade mark the newer town, which opens out toward the flat agricultural plain and the transport routes crossing it.
