The map
Xichuan Map Poster & Print
This Xichuan is in eastern Gansu, on the Loess Plateau, one of the most unusual landscapes in China. The plateau is made of fine wind-blown soil that has been cut by water into steep gullies and narrow valleys. From above, the town sits on flatter valley ground, with the land around it deeply eroded.
On the Loess Plateau, roads and settlements follow the few level surfaces. Streets run along the valley, and paths climb the slopes toward fields on the ridges. Terraced fields, cut into the loess in long curved steps, often cover the hillsides. On a map they look almost like contour lines.
A Xichuan map poster shows how a town fits into a landscape shaped by erosion. The streets form a compact core, but the setting is what makes the design distinctive, with branching gullies and terraces spreading across the sheet. It suits anyone from eastern Gansu or drawn to this landscape.

Valley-floor streets
The streets occupy the flatter valley ground, so the town takes a narrow, elongated shape. The land decides where building is possible.
Terraced slopes
Farmers have cut terraces into the hillsides in long curves. On the poster they follow the terrain like contour lines.

Why Xichuan
A map that means something
Xichuan makes a striking poster for people from Gansu and for anyone who likes landscapes shaped by erosion. The branching gullies and terraces give it a look that no flat-land city map has.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, for example with a family name or a year. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Sand suits the loess country particularly well.
