Xinye lies in the south of Henan, in the Nanyang basin near the border with Hubei. The country around it is flat and heavily farmed. On a map the town is a compact block of streets set among fields. The Bai River passes along the town and is the main natural line on the map. It bends gently across the plain, and roads and bridges cross it at intervals.
