The map
Xiping Map Poster & Print
Xiping lies in south-eastern Gansu, in the hilly country of the Tianshui area, where the Loess Plateau breaks up into ridges and valleys draining toward the Wei River. This is land shaped by fine yellow soil and water. The hillsides are cut into terraces, and settlements gather wherever a valley floor leaves room.
On a map the town is a tight group of streets along its valley, and the roads leaving it follow the watercourses or climb in switchbacks over the ridges. There is no wide grid. The streets fit into whatever flat ground the landscape allows.
A Xiping map poster brings out the character of the loess hills. Dense lines mark the town, while fine, branching lines mark the gullies around it and the paths that climb the terraces. It is a restrained, almost botanical image of a part of China that most maps pass over.

Branching gullies
Erosion has cut the loess into tree-like networks of ravines, and in black and white they give the surrounding map a delicate, veined texture.
Switchback roads
Roads out of town zigzag over the ridges between valleys, forming tight curves that stand out against the gentler lines of the streams.

Why Xiping
A map that means something
