The map

Xique-Xique sits on the São Francisco River in the interior of Bahia, where the river is broad and dotted with islands and sandbanks. On the map, the water forms a long, powerful edge along the town. The town takes its name from the xique-xique, a spiny cactus common in the dry northeastern backlands.
