The map
Yanagawa Map Poster & Print
Yanagawa lies in southern Fukuoka prefecture, on low ground near the shore of the Ariake Sea. Its defining feature on any map is water: a network of canals, originally the moats and channels of a castle town, winds through the centre and around the old districts, giving the city its nickname as the Venice of Kyushu.
The town was the seat of the Tachibana clan, and its villa and gardens remain near the canals today. Visitors ride flat-bottomed boats along the willow-lined waterways, and the town is also known as the birthplace of the poet Kitahara Hakushū and for its steamed eel served over rice.
A Yanagawa map poster is one of the most graphic small-city prints you can hang. The canals trace fine double lines through the streets, bending and branching in ways no planned grid would, and the surrounding paddy fields and reclaimed land lead the eye down to the sea.

Castle town core
The old castle site and the Tachibana residence sit among the waterways, where the street pattern follows the curves of the canals.
Toward the Ariake Sea
South of the town, flat farmland and reclaimed ground stretch to the coast, giving the composition a calm, open lower edge.
