Yufu covers a mountainous part of Oita prefecture in Kyushu, and its best-known district, Yufuin, sits in a small basin below Mount Yufu. On a map the terrain dominates. Yufuin is one of Japan's best-known hot spring towns. It is known for a quieter style of spa resort, with small inns, galleries and walking streets rather than large hotels. Lake Kinrin, fed partly by warm springs, often steams on cool mornings. Mount Yufu, with its distinctive double summit, rises to the northeast.
