Zalinjay, also written Zalingei, is the capital of Central Darfur in western Sudan. It stands beside Wadi Azum, a seasonal watercourse that flows only during the rains, and the volcanic highlands of Jebel Marra rise to the east. On a map the town appears as a loose grid of low-density blocks, with the wadi's sandy bed tracing a pale band along its edge.
The town is home to the University of Zalingei and serves as an administrative and market centre for the surrounding farming and herding communities.
