Achaguas lies in the state of Apure, in the heart of the Venezuelan llanos, the vast tropical grasslands that stretch across the interior of the country. The land here is almost perfectly flat, and on the map the town appears as a compact grid of streets surrounded by open plains.
The llanos are shaped by water, with rivers and seasonal channels, known locally as caños, winding across the landscape. During the rainy season much of the surrounding land floods, and the map reveals a pattern of meandering watercourses, lagoons and low-lying ground around the town.
