Ko e mape
Agua Caliente is an unincorporated community in the Sonoma Valley, strung along State Route 12 north of the town of Sonoma. It belongs to a chain of small settlements, alongside Boyes Hot Springs and Fetters Hot Springs, that blend into one another along the highway. Its boundaries on the map are soft, and the road does most of the organising.
The name, Spanish for hot water, points to the geothermal springs that drew visitors to this part of the valley in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when resorts and bathhouses opened in the area. Today the pattern is mostly residential: short side streets branching off the highway, Sonoma Creek winding close by, and vineyards pressing in from the valley floor.
An Agua Caliente map poster shows a place defined by its valley. The straight spine of the highway, the meandering creek and the parcelled geometry of the vineyards give the sheet a clear structure, while the hills on either side fade into open, unbuilt space. It is a quietly detailed portrait of wine country at the scale of a neighbourhood.
Sonoma Highway runs straight through the community, and nearly every local street hangs off it. The result is a comb-like pattern that makes the settlement's shape easy to read from above.
The creek winds along the valley floor near the community. Its irregular line and tree-lined banks soften the straight roads and rectangular vineyard blocks around it.
Vineyards fill the surrounding valley in neatly divided parcels, and their boundaries read as a quiet grid of fields around the edges of the built-up area.
