Aiken's downtown has an unusual grid. Several main streets are divided by broad, planted medians, giving the centre a spacious, parkway-like character. That wide grid is clear from above. On the west side of town lies Hitchcock Woods, among the largest urban forests in the United States. It is laced with sandy trails and reserved for walkers and riders, not cars.
From the late nineteenth century Aiken became a winter resort for wealthy families from the North, who were drawn by the mild climate and the sandy soil suited to horses. Equestrian life still shapes the town. Polo fields, training tracks and unpaved lanes in the Horse District sit a short distance from the historic centre. The Savannah River Site lies to the south.
An Aiken map poster shows the centre's divided streets, the large green area of the woods and the looser roads of the horse country around them. The map shows a small Southern city where land for horses, trees and open space has been deliberately protected for a long time.
Several of Aiken's downtown streets are split by wide planted medians, so the grid prints with unusually broad, generous spacing between parallel lines.
Among the largest urban forests in the country, the woods form a big green area crossed by sandy trails for riders and walkers, with no roads.
Near the centre, unpaved lanes, stables and training tracks create a distinctive part of town devoted to Aiken's long equestrian tradition.
