Aïn Defla is the capital of the province of the same name in northern Algeria, located in the wide valley of the Chelif, the country's longest river. The town sits on the valley floor, with the Zaccar massif rising to the north near Miliana and the Ouarsenis mountains to the south. From above, the built-up area forms a compact grid surrounded by irrigated farmland.
During the colonial period the town was known as Duperré, and its central streets still follow a regular plan from that era, with straight roads and rectangular blocks. Newer districts and housing estates have grown around this core, spreading out along the main roads. The railway and the motorway that run through the Chelif valley between Algiers and Oran pass close by, adding long lines to the map.
The valley around Aïn Defla is one of Algeria's important agricultural areas, known for vegetables, fruit and cereals, and the fields are laid out in regular plots that fill the plain. An Aïn Defla map poster shows the town set within this farming landscape, with mountains on either side, a composition that speaks of place and work at once.
The central district keeps its regular plan of straight streets and rectangular blocks, the clearest geometric element on the map and the heart of the town.
The broad valley floor, with its river, road and rail corridors, runs across the map from east to west and gives the composition a strong horizontal direction.
Irrigated fields surround the town in orderly plots, adding a fine, even texture that frames the built-up area and leads toward the surrounding hills.
