Albal belongs to L'Horta Sud, the ring of towns just south of Valencia. On a map it appears as a compact, fairly regular block of streets with the neighbouring municipalities close by, while the remaining land is split into the narrow, parcelled fields of the huerta, Valencia's historic irrigated farmland.
That field pattern is one of the most distinctive things about the area from above. Small plots are divided by paths and acequias, the irrigation channels that have watered this plain for centuries. East of the town the land flattens toward the rice fields and lagoon of the Albufera, so water is present on the map even where it is hard to see.
