Albenga lies on the Riviera di Ponente in western Liguria, on one of the few broad coastal plains along this mountainous shore. Its old centre is a compact medieval town whose streets still follow the grid of the Roman settlement of Albingaunum. The two main axes cross near the cathedral. On the map, the historic core forms a dense, nearly rectangular block surrounded by newer districts.
Albenga is known for its tall medieval towers, which rise over the rooftops of the old town, and for its early Christian baptistery, one of the oldest monuments in Liguria. Offshore lies the small island of Gallinara. The plain around the town is intensively cultivated, and vegetables and herbs from Albenga are known throughout Italy.
