Ali Mendjeli is a new town built on a plateau south of Constantine in northeastern Algeria. It was planned to relieve the pressure on the old city, which sits on a rocky site cut by deep gorges and has little room to grow. Here, the land is open and the layout could be planned from scratch.
On the map, this is immediately apparent. The town is divided into large units, known locally by numbers, each containing apartment blocks, schools and services. Wide avenues separate them and form a strong, regular framework that looks quite different from the winding streets of older Algerian towns.
