Anda stands on the Songnen plain in western Heilongjiang, on the railway and expressway corridor between Harbin and Daqing. The land here is almost perfectly flat. From above the city is a compact grid with a railway line running along it, and all around it spread large fields, pastures and the irregular shapes of shallow lakes and saline wetlands.
The area is known for dairy farming. The open grasslands of the Songnen plain support large herds, and Anda has built much of its economy around milk production and processing. Its position between two bigger cities also shaped it: the town grew as a stop on the line connecting them.
