Ko e mape
Angoulême is the capital of the Charente department in southwestern France, built on a rocky promontory high above the Charente river. On a map the old town is unmistakable. It is a dense, rounded plateau of streets enclosed by the line of its former ramparts, with the river winding past below and newer districts spreading across the lower ground and the surrounding hills.
A boulevard now follows the ramparts around much of the plateau, with wide views over the valley. The city is internationally known for its comics festival, held every January, and for painted murals that turn walls across town into comic strips. Near the edge of the old town stands the Romanesque cathedral of Saint-Pierre, famous for its sculpted façade.
An Angoulême map poster shows why the city looks so distinctive from above: an upper town ringed by walls like an island, a river curving below, and roads zigzagging down the slopes. It is a natural choice for comics fans who have been to the festival, and for anyone who has climbed from the station up to the ramparts.
The line of the old walls wraps around the plateau. It clearly outlines the upper town and separates it from the valley below.
The river curves around the foot of the promontory, with islands and bends that add a soft, flowing line beneath the tight old streets.
Narrow streets, small squares and the cathedral fill the upper town in a compact, irregular pattern that reads like a medieval plan.

Ko e ha Angoulême
Angoulême is a place people visit on purpose, for the festival or for the old town, and a map is a subtle souvenir that avoids the obvious. The shape of the walled plateau is strong enough to stand on its own as a graphic image.
Add a title, a subtitle marking the year of a festival, and your own coordinates line, then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The HD files include six sizes for $9, and printed posters ship from partners in over 30 countries.
