Arandas sits in Los Altos de Jalisco, the high plateau east of Guadalajara, at roughly two thousand metres. From above, its centre follows the classic Mexican grid. Straight streets meet at right angles around a main plaza and its church, and the block pattern stretches out evenly in every direction. It is one of the clearest layouts a small city can offer on paper.
The town is closely tied to tequila. The red soils of the surrounding highlands are planted with blue agave, and several well-known highland tequila houses are based in and around Arandas.
