Araras lies in the interior of São Paulo state, a medium-sized city in a region long associated with sugarcane and agriculture. Its name means macaws in Portuguese. On a map the town shows the typical pattern of the São Paulo interior: a regular grid of blocks around a central square and main church.
From that core, newer neighbourhoods spread out in grids and curving subdivisions of their own.
