Ariel is an Israeli settlement city in the central West Bank, and its international status is disputed. Its shape on the map comes directly from the terrain: the town stretches for several kilometres along a narrow ridge, running roughly east to west, so the built-up area is long and thin rather than round. Main roads follow the crest while smaller streets curve down the slopes.
