Arlit lies in northern Niger, on the western edge of the Aïr Mountains and deep in the Sahara. On a map the town appears as a compact cluster of streets surrounded by vast open space, with only a few roads and tracks leading away across the desert.
The town grew up to serve nearby uranium mines, and the map shows a mix of planned sections with regular blocks and more irregular neighbourhoods that developed around them.
