Asadābād lies in Hamadan province in western Iran, west of the city of Hamadan on the main road toward Kermanshah. East of the town the road climbs over the Asadabad pass, a route that has carried travellers across the Zagros for centuries. The town is widely associated with Sayyid Jamal al-Din Asadabadi, often known as al-Afghani, the influential nineteenth-century reformer and writer, and many regard it as his birthplace.
