Āsela is the capital of the Arsi Zone in Ethiopia's Oromia region, set high on a plateau southeast of Addis Ababa. The land around it rises and falls in broad folds, with farmland stretching toward the slopes of Mount Chilalo. On a map, the town has a central grid around its main roads. The Arsi highlands are among Ethiopia's most important wheat-growing areas, and the cool climate at this altitude shapes daily life.
