Ko e mape
Ashington, in Northumberland, grew rapidly in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries around its coal mines, and was often described as the largest mining village in the world. The town's layout still reflects that period. Rows of terraced houses were built in straight, parallel lines for the miners and their families, and on a map they create one of the most distinctive street patterns in northern England.
Those long terraces, running side by side like ruled lines on a page, form the heart of the drawing. Around them sit later estates with curving streets and cul-de-sacs, and to the south the River Wansbeck winds east towards the North Sea. To the north-east, the former Woodhorn Colliery is now a museum, next to the lake and paths of a country park.
Ashington is known well beyond Northumberland for its footballers, including Jackie Milburn and the brothers Jack and Bobby Charlton. It is also known for the Pitmen Painters, a group of miners who became celebrated artists. An Ashington map poster reduces the town to its essential structure, where the repetition of the old rows speaks directly to that shared industrial past.

The Wansbeck curves along the southern side of the town on its way to the North Sea, adding a soft line to the otherwise orderly street plan.
The former Woodhorn Colliery, now a museum, sits beside a country park with a lake, forming an open green area on the north-eastern side of the map.

Many families in Ashington have generations of mining history, and this map honours that without nostalgia or decoration. It suits a football fan, a former resident, or someone who simply loves the graphic rhythm of terraced streets.
Set the title and subtitle to anything you like, perhaps a family surname or the row where you grew up, and adjust the coordinates line. Choose one of five styles, from Classic black & white to Blueprint, and buy the HD files for $9 or a printed poster.
