Ashtarak lies about twenty kilometres north-west of Yerevan, on the lower slopes of Mount Aragats. The Kasagh River runs through the town in a deep gorge, and that canyon is the key feature of the map. Neighbourhoods sit on the plateaus on either side, and the roads come together at the places where the gorge can be crossed.
Ashtarak is one of the oldest settlements in Armenia. Its three-arched stone bridge over the Kasagh dates from the seventeenth century, and small medieval churches, including the seventh-century Karmravor, stand on the cliffs above the river. Modern road bridges now span the gorge at greater heights.
