Assen is the capital of Drenthe, a province of heath, woods and farmland in the northeast of the Netherlands. On a map the town has a small historic centre surrounded by wide residential neighbourhoods laid out in curving streets, with large green areas such as the Asserbos woods close to the middle.
The town is best known for the TT Circuit Assen, home of the Dutch TT motorcycle race since the early twentieth century, which lies on the southern edge of town. The Noord-Willemskanaal starts in Assen and runs north towards Groningen, a straight line of water through the landscape.
