At these coordinates, Aţ Ţārif lies on the west bank of the Nile opposite Luxor, where the narrow green strip of cultivated land meets the desert. The map is divided into two worlds: to the east, fields, canals and village streets between the river and the farmland; to the west, the empty slopes and limestone cliffs of the Theban hills. The boundary between them is sharp and clearly visible from above.
The name El-Tarif is known to Egyptologists as the site of an ancient necropolis at the northern end of the Theban cemetery, where rulers of the early Middle Kingdom were buried in large rock-cut tombs. Today the area is largely agricultural, with houses and small settlements along the roads and canals that run through the fields.
An Aţ Ţārif map poster shows the essential geography of Upper Egypt in miniature: the river, the green band of fields that depends on it and the desert beyond. In black and white, the fine pattern of irrigation channels and field boundaries stands out against the blank space of the desert, making the edge between the two the most striking line on the sheet.
The sharp boundary between irrigated fields and bare desert runs along the western side of the map, one of the clearest lines in Egypt.
Canals and field boundaries divide the cultivated strip into small plots, creating a fine texture across the fertile land.
To the east the farmland extends toward the river, with village roads connecting settlements along the way to the west bank.
