Ko e mape
Athiémé stands on the east bank of the Mono River in southwestern Benin, where the river forms the border with Togo. On the map the river is the defining line. A broad, winding band runs along the western edge of town, and streets and footpaths reach down toward the water from the slightly higher ground where most houses stand.
The land around the town is low and flat and has been shaped by the river's seasonal floods. Fields, palm trees and small hamlets spread across the floodplain, linked by a loose, irregular network of tracks. In black and white, the curves of the Mono and its side channels give the composition a gentle, flowing movement that a street grid cannot.
Athiémé is the seat of its commune in the Mono department, and daily life here has long been connected with the river and the country on its far bank. An Athiémé map poster shows a border town defined more by water than by roads. The river is both the boundary and the centre of the place.
The river sweeps past the town in wide bends and forms the international border. On the poster it is the strongest element, a flowing shape that sets the whole composition.
The flat, seasonally flooded land around Athiémé is divided into farm plots and crossed by footpaths. It gives the map a soft, irregular texture beyond the town.
The built-up area sits close to the water. A small network of streets runs inland from the riverbank toward the roads that connect Athiémé with the rest of the department.
