Awendo is in Migori County, in southwestern Kenya, in the farming country east of Lake Victoria. The town is closely linked to sugar. The South Nyanza Sugar Company, usually known as Sony Sugar, has its factory here, and sugarcane is the main crop across much of the surrounding land. Its influence shows on the map.
The town centre is compact, with a small network of streets around the main road and market. Beyond it, cane fields and smallholdings spread out in long, regular parcels, and farm roads run through them to carry cane to the mill. The factory site forms a large, clearly defined block that is easy to distinguish from the residential streets.
