Azambuja sits on the right bank of the Tagus valley northeast of Lisbon, where hills give way to the wide lezíria, the low river plain. On a map the town looks like a strip. Its streets follow the main road and the railway, and to the east there is a large open area of fields, drainage channels and farm tracks running down to the river.
The Linha do Norte, Portugal's main line between Lisbon and Porto, passes through the town. Azambuja is also known as a logistics hub thanks to its location near the motorway and the capital.
