Bahār lies in Hamadan Province in western Iran, a short distance northwest of the city of Hamadan. It sits on a high, open plain at well over a thousand metres, where the land is mostly given to farming. From above, the town forms a compact centre of streets and walled compounds, surrounded by fields, orchards and the straight lines of irrigation.
The town serves as the administrative centre of its county and as a market for the villages around it. Winters on this plateau are cold and summers dry, and the pattern of cultivation reflects that climate, with water carefully channelled across the plain.
