Ko e mape
Bali is a town in the North-West Region of Cameroon, a short distance southwest of Bamenda on the high grassland plateau. It is the seat of Bali Nyonga, one of the best-known traditional kingdoms of the Grassfields. The fon's palace remains an important centre of the community's cultural life.
From above, Bali is loose and spread out. Streets and tracks run across rolling upland, with houses set among gardens and farmland instead of packed into dense blocks. A main road links the town to Bamenda and the wider region. Smaller lanes branch off it towards the surrounding quarters and villages, following the rise and fall of the hills.
A Bali map poster shows a very different kind of town from a European grid. It is an open pattern of roads across green country, gathered around its traditional centre. The lines are irregular and the gaps are wide, which gives the composition a light, airy feel in any of the five styles.
The area around the fon's palace is the historic heart of Bali Nyonga. The town's older streets gather here, and ceremonial and community life still centres on it.
Roads and tracks spread across the hilly grassland in irregular lines. They connect scattered quarters and farms instead of forming a compact urban core.
A main road runs from Bali towards Bamenda, the regional capital. It is the strongest line on the map and ties the town to the rest of the North-West.
