Balingen is the district town of the Zollernalbkreis in Baden-Württemberg, lying in the valley of the Eyach just below the steep north-western edge of the Swabian Jura. The river runs through the town, and the map shows the settlement spreading along its course and up the gentler slopes on either side.
The historic centre is compact and easy to pick out, with its town church and the small Zollernschloss standing close to the river. Around it, residential districts and industrial areas extend along the valley floor, while villages incorporated into the town sit on the surrounding higher ground, linked by winding roads.
