Ko e mape
Barranquilla lies on the west bank of the Magdalena, Colombia's greatest river, a short distance before it reaches the Caribbean. From above, the river is the defining line: wide, brown and heavily used, with the city's grid running up to its bank and the ports and industrial zones along the water. At the mouth, long jetties known as Bocas de Ceniza guide the river out to sea.
The city grew in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as Colombia's main gateway for river and sea trade, and it was one of the first places in the country to receive many imports and new ideas. Today it is best known for its Carnival, recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
A Barranquilla map poster shows the historic centre near the river, the street grid climbing gently to the west, and the newer bridge over the Magdalena linking the city to the far bank. Wetlands and channels on the eastern side of the river provide a wide, open contrast to the dense city.
The river runs along the city's eastern side, lined with docks and industrial sites. Its width makes it the strongest single feature on the map.
To the north, the river reaches the Caribbean between long stone jetties, a narrow, straight channel pointing out into open water.
A large bridge carries the road across the Magdalena to the eastern bank, one long line spanning the widest water in the composition.
