Barrington occupies a peninsula in Bristol County, Rhode Island, on the eastern side of Narragansett Bay. Water borders it on almost every side: the Barrington and Warren rivers to the east, the bay to the south and the Providence River and a string of coves to the west. From above, the town looks like a piece of land cut out by tidal water.
The streets follow that shape. Instead of a grid, roads curve along the shorelines and peninsulas, with quiet residential lanes leading down to marshes and small harbours. The East Bay Bike Path, built on a former railway line, crosses the town on its way between Providence and Bristol and forms one of the few straight lines on the map.
