Barstow sits in the Mojave Desert roughly halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. From above, it is a crossroads town. Interstate 15 and Interstate 40 meet here, the old Route 66 runs through the middle as Main Street, and the railway spreads out into one of the largest classification yards in the western United States.
The Mojave River passes along the town. For most of the year its bed is dry and wide, and it appears on the map as a soft, braided band rather than a line of water. Around it, the streets form a grid that fades into desert lots, with open ground stretching toward low, bare mountains.
