Bayan Nur lies in western Inner Mongolia, on the Hetao plain inside the great northern loop of the Yellow River. Its urban centre, Linhe District, is compact and orderly, with straight roads laid out on flat ground. What makes the area distinctive on a map is the network around it: long irrigation canals and drains that have turned a dry region into farmland.
Irrigation here goes back many centuries, and the Hetao system is one of the largest in China. It draws water from the Yellow River along the southern edge of the prefecture. To the north, the Yin Mountains rise abruptly from the plain, and beyond them the land opens into grassland and desert that stretch towards the border with Mongolia.
