Beed is the headquarters of Beed district in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, set on the dry Deccan plateau. The Bindusara river runs through the town, and on a map its course forms a clear line through the street network. The older, tightly built quarters sit close to the water, and newer neighbourhoods extend outward along the main roads.
The town has a long past. It was ruled by a succession of Deccan kingdoms and later formed part of the Nizam of Hyderabad's state. Its old fabric still shows in the narrow, irregular lanes of the centre.
