Békés lies on the Great Hungarian Plain, a short distance north of Békéscsaba. The town gave its name to the county, and its layout is typical of the region's old market towns: broad streets, deep house plots and a loose, generous pattern that covers far more ground than the population alone would suggest. Water shapes Békés more than anything else. The Kettős-Körös river runs close by, and old channels and backwaters curve around parts of the town.
