Belonia is the headquarters of South Tripura district in north-eastern India. It stands on the Muhuri River, close to the international border with Bangladesh. The river shapes the map. It winds through the area, and the town's streets gather near its banks, with a denser centre of markets and offices and quieter neighbourhoods further out.
Tripura is almost surrounded by Bangladesh, and Belonia lies very close to the border, which runs near the edge of the town. Around it, the landscape is a mix of low hills, paddy fields and settlements linked by rural roads. Main routes connect Belonia with Agartala, the state capital, and with other towns in the south.
