Billings is the largest city in Montana, spread across the valley of the Yellowstone River. The city grew from a railroad town founded in 1882 by the Northern Pacific and named after the railroad's president, Frederick Billings. Its downtown grid is set at an angle, following the railway line, while newer neighbourhoods spread out in straight north-south blocks.
North of downtown, the Rimrocks, a line of sandstone cliffs, rise above the valley and form a strong edge to the city. The Yellowstone River runs along the south and east, with cottonwood trees along its banks. Beyond the rims and river, open plains and ranch land extend in every direction.
